DISCLAIMER
Users of SLQWiK must accept this disclaimer of warranty: "SLQWiK is
supplied as is. The author disclaims all warranties, expressed or
implied, including, without limitation, the warranties of
merchantability and of fitness for any purpose. The author assumes
no liability for damages, direct or consequential, which may result
from the use of SLQWiK."
SHAREWARE AGREEMENT
SLQWiK is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge to the
user for evaluation. Feel free to share it with your friends, but
please do not give it away altered or as part of another system.
The essence of "user-supported" software is to provide personal
computer users with quality software without high prices, and to
also provide incentive for programmers to continue to develop new
products.
If you find this program useful and find that you are using it and
continue to use it after a reasonable trial period of forty-five
days, then you must register it. The registration fee will license
one copy for use on any one computer at any one time. You must
treat this software just like a book. An example is that this
software may be used by any number of people and may be freely
moved from one computer location to another, so long as there is no
possibility of it being used at one location while it's being used
at another. Just as a book cannot be read by two different persons
at the same time.
Commercial users of SLQWiK must register and pay for their copies
of SLQWiK within forty-five days of first use or their license to
use SLQWiK is withdrawn. A BBS operated for profit IS a commercial
environment; however, a subscription system not operated for profit
is not considered a commercial environment in relation to this
agreement. Site-License arrangements may be arranged by contacting
A.B.S.
Anyone distributing SLQWiK for any kind of remuneration must first
contact A.B.S. at the address listed below for authorization. This
authorization will be automatically granted to distributors
recognized by the (ASP) as adhering to its guidelines for shareware
distributors, and such distributors may begin offering SLQWiK
immediately; however, A.B.S. must still be advised so that the
distributor can be kept up-to-date with the latest version of
SLQWiK.

WHAT DOES SLQWiK DO?
SLQWiK is the complete off-line mail door for Searchlight. It now
supports QWK and Text packets, other types will be added in the
future.
SLQWiK allows users to download their new messages and read/reply
off-line, using almost any .QWK reader. There are MANY .QWK
readers available, including readers for operating systems other
than MS-DOS.
SLQWiK creates .QWK packets from the SL message bases, and reads in
.REP packets. It follows the industry standard QWK mail format.
It can optionally include welcome, news, and goodbye screens
designed by the SysOp. SLQWiK supports both old style and new
style command messages.
In Text mode, SLQWiK allows users to download their new messages in
a text file, no off-line replies are possible.
An optional new files listing can be downloaded with either format.

SLQSetup will create the following files when first run:
SLQWIK.CFG - SLQWiK Configuration File
SLQWIK.USR - User Configuration File
Page 4
SLQWiK 1.10 Copyright (c) 1991,1992 A.B.S. - ALL RIGHTS RESERVED
The following files MUST be in your path for SLQWiK to run:
PKZIP.EXE - Used to Archive QWK & Text Packets
PKUNZIP.EXE - Used to UnArchive REP Packets
DSZ.COM - Used to Download/Upload Packets. SLQWiK will
search for GSZ.EXE if DSZ.COM is not found.
INSTALLATION
SLQWiK will run on any system running MS-DOS 3.3 or higher with at
least 384K free RAM. With swapping enabled, SLQWiK requires
approximately 200K free RAM.
SLQWiK is multi-tasker aware. It will write to the virtual screen
if a supported multi-tasker is detected, and it will give up time
slices while waiting for user input.
SLQWiK (as well as most of my programs) requires an environment
variable to function properly. This environment variable is also
used by other programs (including some by Searchlight Software).
It is SLBBS=[path to config.sl2 for this node]. This makes
multi-node usage easy.
If your node 1 config.sl2 is in D:\BBS1 then you would put
SET SLBBS=D:\BBS1 in your batch file that runs that node.
IMPORTANT - for multi-node systems, you must have a separate
SLBBS environment variable for each node. It should be set in
the batch file that runs that node! For single node systems,
you may put it in your autoexec.bat.
If you're running multi-node, you can make sure that the correct
config.sl2 file is loaded by running SLQWiK from a batch file
similar to this:
SLQWIK.BAT
echo off
set slbbs=[path to config.sl2 for this node]
slqwik
Place SLQWiK into its own directory, and place all of its files
there. If it can't find its files, it will abort. SLQWiK also
will look for PKZIP.EXE, PKUNZIP.EXE, and DSZ.COM or GSZ.EXE in
your path.

Run SLQSETUP.EXE. This will write the default configuration files
that SLQWiK needs to run. You can then customize the configuration
for your BBS. Read the SLQSETUP section for more information.
For more information on how SLQWiK works, see the SLQUSER.DOC.
SLQSETUP
SLQSetup is a menu driven setup program for SLQWiK.
Configure - General Configuration Options
BBS Info - General BBS Information
BBSID - 1-6 letters, used for the QWK/REP file name
SysOp Name - Your name, must be the same as registered, case
is important
City, State, Country - BBS City, State, Country
All are optional
BBS Phone # - BBS Phone Number
Show ALL Subboards - 'Y' makes SLQWiK follow the specs, and
show ALL subboards to the user, whether
or not they have access. 'N' only shows
the user the subboards they have read
access to. This option ONLY affects what
the user SEES in his reader.
Rename SysOp - 'Y' renames 'SYSOP' to the above SysOp Name on
export and renames the above SysOp Name to
'SYSOP' on import
Strip Tear Lines - 'Y' causes all occurences of a tear line in
in a message to be deleted. A tear line is
defined as three dashes ('---') starting at
the first character of a line, and followed
by a space or a return/line feed. This
helps keep the Fido Gods happy.

dupes
Path for Swapping to Disk - Directory where the swap file will
be written if swapping to disk
Maximum Messages - Maximum Messages Settings by Baud Rate
Max Msgs Subboard - Maximum Number of Messages that can be
exported on each Subboard

HOW TO RUN SLQWiK
SLQWiK will be run from your doors.def file. The entry is:
2;0;0;[min. access];[door name];[path to SLQWiK];slqwik.exe
The third zero is VERY important!
for example:
2;0;0;5;SLQWiK Off-line Mail Door;d:\doors\slqwik;slqwik.exe
Anyone with access level >= 5 can access the door, and the door is
located in d:\doors\slqwik
Under SL 2.25, SLQWiK can be added to a menu as a door. The
settings are:
1-9 - your preference
10 - SLQWIK.EXE
11 - [path to SLQWIK.EXE]
12 - Force-Color
13 - None
14 - No
15 - None

LOCAL USE
To upload a packet locally, copy the .REP packet into the Local
.REP directory, as defined in SLQSETUP, and run the door (it can
only be run from SL). It will detect that you are local, and when
you go to 'U'pload the packet, it will find it. SLQWiK will NOT
delete the .REP file, this is up to you!
To download a packet locally, just run the door. Your .QWK packet
will be placed in the Local .QWK directory, as defined in SLQSETUP,
when the door is finished. It is your responsibility to delete old
packets.
SLQWIK.SYS
A.B.S. has developed a system similar to the STRINGS.SYS file that
Searchlight uses. This allows the SysOp to completely customize
the Text of SLQWiK (and other A.B.S. software supporting LangSys).
LangSys is a separate (free) utility that compiles/decompiles
A.B.S. language files.
When SLQWIK.SYS is decompiled using LangSys, a text file,
SLQWIK.LNG, is produced. This file resembles a decompiled
STRINGS.SYS. It may be edited with any text editor.
The primary purpose of this file is to allow SLQWiK to be ported
to other languages; however, it allows the SysOp to change
virtually all the text in SLQWiK. The maximum length for a prompt
string is 12 characters. The maximum length for all other strings
is 40 characters. Please observe these guidelines when editing
SLQWIK.LNG. Also, please note that changing some strings can
cause odd formatting of output.
Programmers interested in using LangSys should contact A.B.S.
The specs will be given out at no charge, as well as Turbo Pascal
source to use a language file in any program.
